Longevity fascinates us. What makes you live longer?
Who would not dream of long and healthy years. In the future, more people will enjoy them.
What is the life expectancy today?
Life expectancy in the USA for females is 81.2 years; for males, it's 76.4 years. The rise in men's life expectancy may be explained, for example, by the fact that men's smoking has been steadily diminishing since the early 1960s.
What are the factors of longevity?
Medical development, improved nutrition and hygiene, and hence significantly lower infant mortality rates have prolonged our lifespan. Even the most serious infectious diseases have virtually disappeared: we do not get polio, measles or rubella, and diphtheria only occasionally. Citizens' lifestyles are healthier than earlier: smoking has decreased and changes have taken place in the diet for heart health.
Life expectancy is highest in Japan. There are several Sub-Saharan African countries with a life expectancy on both sides of 50 years.
Who lives for a long time?
Education, income and occupational status are linked to longevity. For example, in men, the difference between the lowest and highest income quotients in the life expectancy of 35-year-olds is more than ten years ahead in favor of the highest income quintile.
The difference in females is smaller, but for both sexes the differences will increase rather than decrease.
Relationships and employment are also associated with an average longer life expectancy.
What are causes of death among persons aged 65 and over?
The most common causes of death among the elderly are cardiovascular diseases. Other causes in the statistics are malignant neoplasms and cerebrovascular diseases. Alzheimer's disease is becoming more and more common with the aging population, and its effect also grows as a death cause.
Maximum human lifespan? Are there any limits?
Although some of the previous projections suggest that mortality can not be reduced at the current rate in Western countries for a very long time, so far it has continued to decline all the time, and as a result, life expectancy has increased.
Researchers have different views on how high a person's lifespan can grow. In particular, the breakthroughs in biomedicine, genetics and cell research will probably be such that they may revolutionize earlier perceptions of maximum life expectancy. According to some researchers, a person could live up to 200 years. Currently, the oldest person in the world is 115 years old.
What kind of lifestyle brings more years?
The main ones are probably familiar: non-smoking, moderate alcohol consumption, healthy and regular diet, adequate sleep and exercise.
The number of healthy people in the world is actually growing faster than life expectancy. Healthy years mean a time when a person does not have any serious chronic illness. Healthy life-years can also be affected by lifestyles.
Does outlook on life affect life expectancy?
Long-term stress endangers cardiovascular health, and hence spirit: mental pressure increases blood pressure and increases secretion of stress hormones, which increases cholesterol and increases blood clotting and inflammatory susceptibility.
There are studies that suggest a positive attitude towards life activates the body's defense system and helps fight inflammatory diseases. Both positive attitude to life and stress management can be learned.
What is biological age?
The chronological age tells the person's age in years, months, and days. Biological age means the physical and mental state in which the person actually is - in a sense, human ability to function. The concept is not scientific, but is determined by comparing the condition of a person to another's condition. Its purpose is to attract people to find out what kind of lifestyle choices they can influence on their well-being.
How is biological age tested?
The tests are largely queries where respondents are asked about lifestyle, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, eating and exercise habits. In addition to this, we look at family relationships, general attitude, sleeping and experience of happiness. In some cases, blood pressure and heart rate measurement may also be included.
How reliable is the life expectancy test?
Comprehensive and research-based tests produce on the population level basically similar results as the scientific studies used in their production. Instead, using such a test for predicting the life of a single person is not suitable. Their purpose is to energize and guide their citizens to healthy lifestyles and hopefully for a long and happy life.
